OUR HISTORY

Exceptional Foresters has been guided by the philosophy that developmentally disabled people have the same rights and responsibilities as other citizens. Among these rights are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Established in 1957, Exceptional Foresters Inc. (EFI) is a private nonprofit corporation located in Shelton, Washington. Bob and Louise Kimbel wanted a better life for their sons than putting them in an institution or keeping them home, out of sight. With other parents with similar circumstance, they established Exceptional Foresters Inc. to provide opportunities for those sons. The work began in the forest with Christmas tree farms and selling firewood. Over the years, additional opportunities were created for both men and women. EFI currently provides residential and vocational services to adults with disabilities by supporting them in the community.
